Feb. 24, 1893: Washington Gov. John McGraw approved the charter for the state’s third public teacher-training school, the New Whatcom Normal School in Bellingham.

Over the years, the school changed its name several times, becoming Western Washington State College of Education in 1937 and Western Washington State College in 1961. In 1977 it was named Western Washington University.
