Angel Island & Alcatraz

Alcatraz

Today, we made our way to Angel Island & Alcatraz. Angel Island was a military outpost and also served as an immigration station. In fact, it was once known as the Ellis Island of the West. The tour was fantastic and the scenery was beautiful.

We next took a ferry to Alcatraz. I was surprised at how small the prison was but the tour was phenominal. It was errie to listen to the recorded tour tell of the history (including a massive riot and attempted prison breaks). I also learned how a group representing various Native American tribes overtook the Island to demand equality and recognition.
